I still have a copy of Kent Beck's now-classic “Extreme Programming Explained” book sitting on my bookshelf from 2000, and I'm not likely to take it down anytime soon. Whereas changes and adversity met during the course of working through a project in waterfall are expected to be avoided, agile (which is somewhat interchangeable with the term “Extreme Programming”) is all about embracing those changes as part of the natural progression of a project. Kent's other contributions to software development include patterns for software, and the rediscovery of test-first programming.
